Project Overview
Located in the heart of Exeter, Queen Street Studios offers vibrant student accommodation. EPD was commissioned to breathe new life into the reception, lounge, laundry room, and outdoor terrace, transforming these underutilised spaces into lively and inviting areas for students to congregate.
The Brief
The project aimed to reimagine the ground floor, creating a versatile environment that caters to the diverse needs of the student community. The goal was to design a space that encourages social interaction and provides distinct areas for dining, lounging, studying, and gaming, offering an engaging and welcoming alternative to staying in their rooms.
Concept Design
The vision was to craft a “home away from home” ambience, utilising a warm and textural palette with inviting colours and playful materials. We defined distinct areas with thoughtful joinery designs, such as open-slatted partitions that create intimate spaces while maintaining clear sightlines. A high counter, clad in slatted wood and painted burgundy, serves as a versatile spot where students can work on laptops, watch TV, play pool, or wait for laundry. Study pods with arched detailing and fluted glass provide privacy without sacrificing openness, not to mention a brand new movie snug carved out of the previous reception space.
The design is enriched with abundant greenery, including a striking moss feature in the reception that creates an Instagrammable arrival moment. Hanging plants throughout the space, combined with soft, low-level lighting, further enhance the sense of comfort and well-being. To accommodate various activities, acoustic materials were installed behind study pods for quiet concentration, and robust nanotech finishes were chosen for tables to endure daily wear and tear. Practicality was a key consideration, with machine-washable rugs selected to handle spills and heavy traffic, ensuring the space wears well over time.
Outcome
The result is a highly functional, warm, and welcoming space that fosters a strong sense of community among residents. The redesign has been met with positive feedback from both staff and students. The enhanced facilities and inviting atmosphere have contributed to the accommodation being fully booked for the following academic year, showcasing the success of the transformation.
